Everyone remembers to plan a second source for a controller. Fewer teams plan one for the soldered-down storage, because eMMC and eMCP parts change slowly, are cheap relative to the bill of materials, and sit at the bottom of the attention list during design-in. Five years later, when a product is certified, tooling is fixed and the board cannot be re-spun, that same part becomes the only line standing between a customer order and a shipment.
This guide covers how to read the supply signals on embedded storage, when to start planning, and what to have ready before you qualify an alternative.
| Term | What it means for sourcing |
|---|---|
| eMMC | NAND plus controller in one JEDEC-standard package, with the interface version and density both specified. The package and command set are standard; the behaviour is not always identical between vendors or generations. |
| eMCP / MCP | eMMC stacked with LPDDR memory in one package. A single part number now carries two devices — so a memory revision inside an MCP is still a memory change, and vice versa. |
| POP (package-on-package) | Memory stacked for direct placement under or over a processor package, common in wearables and compact devices. Height and substrate become mechanical constraints, not just electrical ones. |
Where the stack includes LPDDR4X, the rail scheme of the memory half matters too: our own LPDDR table records parts at 1.8/1.1/1.1, 1.8/1.1/0.6 and 1.8/1.2/1.2 as distinct lines, because the rail set is a real electrical difference.
We deliberately do not publish price forecasts — a forecast you cannot act on is just noise, and if we were confident about the direction of pricing we would already be trading on it. What is actionable is the pattern of events that historically precedes a shortage on a mature embedded-storage part:
Rather than claim a broad catalogue, here is a concrete example from a line we do hold: from a long-running, high-volume smart-glasses production programme we offer verified surplus inventory under original manufacturer part numbers — including the Kingston 32CP16-M4FTC32, an eMMC 5.1 32 GB + LPDDR4X 2 GB POP device in FBGA-144, with 2,283 pieces available for immediate shipment from our Shenzhen warehouse, 48-hour dispatch. That page also lists the rest of the released programme: connectivity and processor parts, a full passives and interconnect set, shielding and RF components — with the complete surplus BOM available on request as a spreadsheet.
For mainstream memory, our cross-reference table covers 126 DDR3/DDR4/LPDDR4(X) parts. And where a design must stay on the original brand, our original-brand stock line is often the answer instead of a substitution.
Tell us the marking and the annual usage and we will tell you, honestly, whether we can support that line — and if we cannot, we will say that rather than sell you something that will not qualify: send an enquiry.
No. We supply original-manufacturer parts from stock — including verified surplus released from production programmes — and PIN2PIN alternatives where we have characterised them. The honest answer to 'can you supply this part' differs by part number, and we give it before you spend time on a qualification.
eMMC is NAND plus controller in one standard package. eMCP stacks memory with the storage device in one package, so a revision in either half changes the part. POP is a stack intended for direct placement with a processor, which makes package height a mechanical constraint as well as an electrical one.
For stock lines we reply within 24 business hours and dispatch in 48 hours from our Shenzhen warehouse; the full surplus BOM for the smart-glasses programme is available as a spreadsheet on request.
Model both. A last-time-buy ties up inventory for the remaining product life and carries moisture sensitivity and obsolescence risk; qualifying a second source costs a sample run plus your existing functional test. For most long-lived programmes the second source wins, but only if it is started while the original is still available for side-by-side comparison.
